Baahubali 2 – திடமிக்க கரங்கள்

Standard

I felt I did not do justice to the movie in my previous post. Thus, I trashed it and am starting a new post.

I watched Baahubali-2 four times in a span of 2 weeks. The first time, I watched Baahubali 2, I was forced to company my friend for this movie. I did not even watch Baahubali-The Beginning fully. I was watching it and halfway, I decided that the movie was just too boring to continue.

Then I watched Baahubali 2. I was left speechless. After watching Baahubali 2, I went back to watch Baahubali-The Beginning. I realised I was very quick to judge. I still did not like the first half of the Baahubali-The Begnning, but once Amarendra Baahubali came onscreen, my eyes were glued to the television. Then I went to watch Baahubali 2 three more times.

Before I go into the cast of Baahubali 2, I want to talk about other things.

Firstly, the set. There were fantastic!!! The difference between the sets of Magizhmathi Empire and Kuntala kingdom is very clearly differentiated to indicate that Magizhmathi Empire is for Amarendra Baahubali(the hero) and Kuntala Kingdom is for Devasena(the heroine). Magizhmathi set is majestic. It is grand and you can just feel the power emitting from it. While on the other hand, Kuntala Kingdom is beautiful and have a feminine touch to it.

Secondly, the war scenes and fighting scenes were epic. I cannot remember another Indian movie that had such grand and vivid war scenes. I am not usually a fan of fight scenes. But I watched these war scenes with interest because one movement leads to another movement in someone else. Even the scene, where Amarendra Baahubali and Kattappa were in disguise and they would be fighting robbers. The timely throwing of weapons back and fro was just too captivating to watch.

Thirdly, the songs. The songs of Baahubali 2(Tamil version) has been on loop in my ipod since the movie came out. I just could not stop listening to the songs. Especially, Orey Oar OorilVandhaai AyyaOru Yaagam and Bale Bale Bale. Ok that is all the songs except for one. I love all these songs. The scenes and the lyrics. The lyrics for the Tamil version of the songs was created by Madhan Karky (Poet Vairamuthu’s son).

He did a fantastic job with the lyrics. Each and every word was just too beautiful and powerful and I just want to keep listening to the songs. And these lyrics complemented by the music by M. M. Keeravani was inspirational. They are just too good. The music was well-thought of for the different scenes. The impact of the music is there especially for Vandhaai Ayya and Bale Bale Bale.

I was talking about sets in this movie, I just love the sets for the song sequence for Orey Oar Ooril. It is so surreal. So beautiful. So magical. And that is the epitome of romantic songs. I know it is not real but I cannot stop wishing that if only it is real….

The BGM in the movie. They just made the scenes come alive. They created the emotions behind the actions. They just pulled the audience into the scenes. Fantastic.

Thirdly, the dialogues. Short. To the point. With a poetic twist. Powerful. Could not be any better. The dialogues too is by Madhan Karky. I just had goosebumps when I heard

‘நீ செய்தது தவறு.

பெண்களின் மேல் கை வைத்தால் வெட்ட வேண்டியது

விரல்களை அல்ல

தலையை.’

The dialogues are not lengthy and very importantly, it has a poetic sense to it. Fantastic. Even the dialogues of the villain of the movie, Bhallaladeva are fantastic.

“இப்புவியில் அவனைப் பற்றி நினைக்க இருவரே உள்ளனர்.

ஒன்று நீ.

மற்றோன்று நான்.”

The above dialogue may not be accurate but it is along this line. And I loved it.

And then comes the cast of the movie. Truthfully, I cannot imagine anyone else playing these characters.

Prabhas as Mahendra Baahubali and Amarendra Baahubali:

I did not favour Mahendra Baahubali. On the other hand, I just loved Amarendra Baahubali. Not for his looks but rather for his mannerisms. The way he moved. The way he swung his sword. The way he reacted for each incident. Slow but impactful and powerful. He was calm. His reactions were not too drastic but he brought it across to the audience with subtle smiles, turn of his head and movement of his body. He played the role of king to the dot. Of course, the fact that he respects women is a big plus point. Not only he respects women but shows it in action. I especially loved the part where he stands beside Devasena because he has promised her that he would respect her and would support her. Many see it as daughter-in-law vs mother-in-law situation. But if you observed carefully, he stands by Devasena because of what his mother have taught him. He did not humiliate his mother to show his support for his love, Devasena. The character Amarendra Baahubali has been brought to life by Prabhas. In all the interviews that were done, it was mentioned that he has given four years of his life for this movie and these four years did not go to waste. These four years has moulded him into Amarendra Baahubali to the dot that it is almost impossible to find any fault in his acting.

Rana Daggubati as Pallvalathevan

Everyone would like the hero. Ok almost everyone likes the hero. He has a heart of gold. He looks after his people. He stands up for injustice. He stands up for his wife. It is very rare, that people like the villain. The only villain, whom I really loved was Arvind Swamy as Siddharth Abimanyu in Thani Oruvan. And now Rana Daggubati as Pallvalathevan. Truthfully, I did not think much of his character when I saw the movie the first two times. Well my eyes were focused on Amarendra Baahubali. But the third and fourth time, it was focused on Pallvalathevan. I realised how easy it would be to miss his actions if we do not focus on him. It may seem like he did not act much BUT he acted so well that his actions speak for his thoughts. His actions are very minute but are very important. I especially loved the scene, when Devasena would send a reply humiliating Sivagami. When Sivagami wants to attack Kuntala Kingdom, Pallvalathevan would move his thumb to ask his father to come near and he would whisper something into his father’s ears. I missed that action the first two times. And even the time, when Devasena would talk back to Sivagami the first time she would meet her in the court of Magizhmathi, Pingalathevan(Pallvalathevan’s father) would stand up to say something but Pallvalathevan would constrict him till he find the right moment. He is a villain who has shown us that a villain does not always need to shout, scream and say long dialogues about crushing the hero. A villain can show all these in calm and controlled gestures. He has shown a villain does not need to be crude in his language. A villain also can speak in a poetic language. I think Rana Daggubati has nailed it as Pallvalathevan.

Anuskha Shetty as Devasena

I am already a fan of Anuskha Shetty after watching Arundhati and Rudramadevi. I loved both movies. I was thinking finally, an actress who do not just dance around and act dumb. An actress who can carry herself well. And she did not fail me in Baahubali 2. I am relieved that the other actresses rejected Baahubali 2 and Anuskha got the opportunity. Because truthfully, no on other than her can pull of this character. Devasena has many cycles of life in one movie. A young woman, a warrior, a lover, a wife and a mother. She did fantastic in each and every one of this stage. I loved it that she did not bow down without a fight. And that she stood up for what she believed in. Anuskha’s beauty and height is an additional benefit for her character. But her acting is what really stood out. During the action scenes, she did not seem any less skilled then her co-star Prabhas. Because, I have noticed in movies, when a woman does an action scene, she does not have the body strength to make it look nature. The pull of the harnesses would be very visible and that spoils the scene.

And whoever says, Anuskha has put on too much weight and is not suitable, back of. You cannot find a better actress then her.

Ramya Krishnan as Rajamatha Sivagami

I have watched Ramya Krishnan’s movies before. But none stayed in my heart. I watched Baahubali 2 and the character Sivagami would stay in my heart for a long time to come. The way a movie starts is very important. It breaks or makes the movie. And using Sivagami character to open the movie is a great move. Her voice and the emotion is that voice makes the audience glued to the screen. She was a loving mother and strong ruler in a span of a few minutes. She can cry to show her love for Baahubali but decide to kill him in a span of a few minutes. The only person that I have seen who can change feelings and body language within a few minutes is actor Nassar. And now Ramya Krishnan. I loved the way Ramya Krishnan speaks as Sivagami, so strong. So powerful. Even though she had the ability to lead a kingdom, she showed that a mother would want her sons to rule the kingdom. But at the same time, the same mother can be brought down by the love for her sons. Superb!

Satyaraj as Kattappa

I am already a fan of Satyaraj. Partly for his acting but mainly for his beliefs. I have much respect for him because firstly he is a fan of M.G.R. Secondly, he follows the way Periyar and lastly he speaks up for Tamilians. And I like him as an actor, because he is witty and has a great sense of humour. And in this movie, he does not fail me in any way. He plays one character that is narrating the whole life story of Amarendra Baahubali. He is also present throughout the movie. Through this movie, I also found out he is skilled in sword fighting. He was a nature with swords and now we know why. As Kattappa, he was a loyal servant, a loving uncle, a trusted friend (that is until he killed Amarendra Baahubali) and a skilled swordsman. Satyaraj showed the struggle Kattappa has to go through between his promise and his conscious. That is so visible in his eyes, face and actions. His throat-cutting replies to Pingalathevan were so good and funny at the same time. The time he tried to help in getting Devasena and Amarendra Baahubali together, his natural sense of humour took over. I loved his character. The only thing that was a bit off was whether an 85 year old man can fight so well? But it is our Indian Cinema. Anything is possible in our Indian Cinema. 🙂

Nassar as Pingalathevan

When I was very young, I saw a movie in which Nassar acted as a villain. I got so scared after watching the movie but I would never forget that one scene where his acting skill just perfect. In a split second, he can change his whole demeanour that he would not have any trace of how he was a few minutes before. Creepy but damn good acting. In this movie, he may not come for all the scenes, but for the scenes he was present he was just amazing. Just uttering a single word, “Sivagami” had so much of mockery in it, that you can just see how much he detest her. He does not need long dialogues, he just needs a few words. No one would be like Nassar and they could not have chosen a more suitable person for this character.

I have never seen a movie, in which all the characters strong. But Baahubali 2 is such a movie. You cannot say one character is better than the other. Because all the characters are strong and all the actors who played these characters have a done a wonderful job.

Now, what is a movie without the person who is behind the idea? The story may seem familiar but the execution is very different.

S. S. Rajamouli is the man behind this movie. The way he spins the whole story is what kept the audience at edge of their seats wanting to know what is going to happen next, even though we do know what would happen next for many of the scenes. His attention to the links and minute details is amazing. The obvious ones being how the head of the statue of Pallvalathevan rolled down to the spot the statue of lingam is. It is like rounding up the whole story. The link where Mahendra Baahubali would be named Shivu by his adopted parents unknowingly. The link where the lord Shiva plays a critical role throughout the movie. The subtle hint that Kuntala Kingdom is going to be destroyed by Magizhmathi empire by breaking the flag of Kuntala Desam that was flying in the ship that brought Devasena to Magizhmathi. I am sure there are many more.S.S. Rajamouli’s eye for details is another thing that made this movie a success. Telling a story is easy. But how you choose to tell it? That is where you make an impact. And S.S. Rajamouli knows how to tell a story in his own way that leaves an imprint on everyone’s heart.

Lastly, there is this one person who made the hero of the movie more powerful than he was already. The dubbing artist for the role of Amarendra Baahubali. His name is Shekar. His voice gives the extra power that Prabhas needs as Amarendra Baahubali. Click here for the interview of this dubbing artist.

Whatever I have written above about Baahubali 2 is my own views. I loved the movie for many reasons. They were some flaws here and there. But they are redundant when you look at the movie as a whole. It is a treat to the eyes, ears and heart.
